Kampong Phluk is a commune in Siem Reap Province in northern-central Cambodia. It is a village built on stilts on the Tonle Sap. The community largely depends on fishing for survival, spending Cambodia's wet season (May - October) fishing. During the dry season (November - April) as the river thins due to receding water, many turn to farming to supplement their income. Tourism, which started in the village approximately 10 years ago, is also a growing part of the local economy.
Kampong Phluk is a cluster of three villages of stilted houses built within the floodplain about 31 km southeast of Siem Reap. The villages are primarily Khmer and have about 3700 inhabitants between them. Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife including crab-eating macaques. The area can be reached by boat from the Chong Khneas or by road.
During the dry season when the lake is low, the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop their 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year, many of the villagers move out onto the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season when the water level rises, the villagers move back to their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water. Kampong Phluk's economy is, as one might expect, based on fishing, primary in shrimp harvesting.
Kampong Phluk has the capacity to receive more than 1000 visitors per day. Currently, the community is working to optimize the benefits of the tourist industry to help the economy to grow. Around 500-700 tourists visit the area each day but only 100-200 of these pay to experience the boat tour through the flooded forest. The boats can accommodate 2-3 people at a time and are rowed by women only. The cost of the trip is $5. This supports the women of the commune as it allows them to support their families and bring in extra income.
The men of the village work fishing or on construction close by to the villages. However, the income that is brought in by these women is still low and more support is needed in order to help these women become economically independent. Support is still required from NGOs, INGOs, and government branches to support and strengthen their enterprise and to improve the services they can offer to tourists.
Kompong Phluk (floating village) is a permanent village opposed to floating, and it's about 25 kilometers east of Chong Khneas. Here is a much better option for you to visit a village on the lake. Kompong Phluk is a relatively small village that provides very good insight into the village lifestyle of the Tonle Sap. Houses are built on stilts up to 6m - 10 m high, and the village is surrounded by flooded forest.

Getting There:
To getting there, from Siem Reap, head toward along national road 6 to Phnom Penh, then you will arrive at the Bakong district after about 16 km.
When you arrive at the Bakong district which you will see a lot of trees along the road, then past the Bakong high school about 1km, then turn right along with the small river head toward the village about 16km more.
The village will be accessible by boat only and you'll need to buy the boat ticket over there.
